Clinical Observation of the Chest Trauma With Hemothorax and/or Pneumothorax

Abstract
Clinical observations were performed on 67 cases of the chest trauma, those were admitted and treated at the department of Chest Surgery, Kyungpook National University Hospital during the past three years period, from 1970 to 1972.
1. The ratio of male to female patient of the chest trauma was 6:1.-
2. Among, 67 cases, 49 cases (73%) had nonpenetratang chest injuries, whereas 18 cases (27%) were from penetrating chest injuries. The most common causes of the chest trauma, were automobile injury (26 cases) and stab wound (16 cases)) in our series.
3. The hemothorax were 30 cases (43.5%), the hemopneumothorax were 22 cases (32.73 and the pneumothorax were 15 cases (23.8%) among 67 cases.
4. Dyspnea and chest pain were most common symptoms, and most important: physical finding were diminished or absent breath sound and subcutaneous emphysema.
5. Closed thoracotomy under water-seal drainage was carried out for 26 cases (38. 8%) and `for 25 cases (37.3%), repeated thoracentesis was carried out.
6. Open thoracotomy was performed for 10 cases.
7. Overall mortality was 6% (4 cases) and causes of death were pulmonary edema, acute card-iopulmonary insufficiency, cardiac arrest and septisemia although not verified by autopsy.
